Expertise
EDI has worked with most of the pipeline operators in North America. Pipeline compressors can be reciprocating or centrifugal. Tighter emissions standards have caused some stations to change from gas turbines and gas engines to using electric motors, some with VFDs.
It is important to filter the pressure pulsation from reciprocating compressors so that excessive energy is not transferred into the pipeline. Pulsation can cause piping failures, vibration of nearby centrifugal compressor units, noise, etc. EDI has conducted noise surveys to assess levels at nearby neighors.
EDI design acoustic bottles for reciprocating compressors and evaluates the compressor manifold system using ANSYS. This is in accordance with API 618 to help insure reliable and safe operation.
EDI has experience with equipment for underground and LNG (liquified natural gas) storage. It is important that pressure pulsations are low for accurate metering.
Torsional vibration studies should be performed in the design stage. EDI has performed measurements to troubleshoot problems where engine crankshafts and couplings were damaged due to high torsional vibration. In some cases, the engine dampers were not properly maintained, or the variable speed unit was operated at resonance.
