Field
Investigation of Piping Systems for Vibration-Induced Stress
and Failures J. C. Wachel, Pressure Vessel and Piping
Conference, ASME Bound Volume #H00219, June 27-July

Vibration-induced
piping stress is an area of major concern for piping designers and
plant operators. Acceptable vibration amplitudes should be based
upon applicable fatigue criteria; however, there are differences
of opinion as to the criteria that should be used. This paper presents
results of field investigations of piping systems with and without
fatigue failures. These data have been compared to criteria given
in the proposed standard ANSI/ASME OM-3-1981. This comparison showed
that piping systems with measured stresses below the code allowables
did not have failures, and those above did.
